    Application of Media Synchronicity Theory to Creative Tasks in Virtual Teams Using the Example of Design Thinking

    Today in many industries it is common to work in virtual teams. At the same time companies must innovate to retain their market share and stay in the market. One possible method to come up with innovations is Design Thinking. However, this method is originally not intended to be used in a virtual team. The objective of this research is to provide a guideline on how to practice Design Thinking in a remote setup, thus travel expenses and planning efforts could be saved. This guideline is based on the media synchronicity theory which is applied to the process of Design Thinking. As a result, it is deduced that the diverging phases in Design Thinking are best supported with asynchronous media. In contrast to the converging phases which are supported best by synchronous media. These results could be used by practitioners to choose the best fitting media for each phase

    MEASURING INDIVIDUAL SEARCH COSTS ON THE MOBILE INTERNET

    The advent of smartphones enables more and more consumers to use the mobile internet. In addition, there is a continuing integration of location-based services (LBS). By means of Global Positioning Systems or WiFi-triangulation LBS provide context-aware information to consumers. This leads to a convergence of online and offline worlds. The usage of LBS delivers additional information to consumers (e.g., alternative offers or detailed product information). Particularly during the search process, information about prices or geographic distances, that are relevant for the purchase, are of importance. The goal of this study is to estimate search costs in a mobile internet context. We first illustrate the relevant literature on search theory (online/offline, mobile/desktop) and consumer behavior. Then we estimate search costs via a choice-based conjoint analysis for a large representative online sample. Our empirical results show that mobile search and LBS have a significant impact on consumer behavior. We quantify search costs in monetary units on an individual level by using geographic distance as a trade-off for price. We find that consumers trade off one extra minute of travel to another store with an average price reduction of 0.87

    Consumer Preferences for Product Information and Price Comparison Apps

    Product information and price comparison apps on smartphones play an increasing role in consumers’ purchase decision process. Consumers are able to choose from a variety of product information search applications (apps) which mainly differ with respect to the information that is provided to consumers during their search process. The goal of this study is to analyze preferences regarding different information types that such apps provide. We conduct an adaptive choice-based conjoint analysis combined with a between subject experiment for a sample of 330 consumers. We identify differences between high- and lowinvolvement products. Individual differences are explained using psychometric latent constructs. Our results reveal heterogeneous preferences which also depend on the product category. Consumer attitudes like quality vs. price consciousness and green consumer values influence the valuation of certain information types

    Assistive Technology for Independent Living with Dementia: Stylized Facts and Research Gaps

    Background: Demographic change and continuously increasing spending on public health have intensified the public debate as well as deliberations on the development and deployment of new assistive technologies; particularly for dementia patients as it affects a large and increasing number of people, not only causing massive social distress, but also great economic losses. Recent advancement in assistive technologies (AT) have therefore fueled the debate on new, IT-reliant ways of providing cure and care of dementia. Still the impact on practice has been little. With this paper, we want to find out to which extent current studies have discussed the impacts of AT for dementia. Methods: We conduct a scoping review of the literature. We identified n=539 unique articles, out of which n=36 reported on impacts of AT use in the context of dementia. Based on this subset, we extracted a list of original statements, which was then further aggregated to 6 stylized facts. Results: The identified stylized facts describe common findings that can be observed in most studies reporting on IT-reliant assistive tools for dementia patients although applying different methods, focusing on different technologies, or working in different contexts. Conclusions: While the identified stylized facts indicate how much evidence behind certain common assumptions is, we additionally found that studies in the area of AT for dementia often neglect the socio-economic and ethical dimension. These are important research gaps for future work

    Notfallerkennung mit ambienten Assistenzsystemen als Bots in sozialen Netzwerken

    Ambiente Assistenzsysteme sollen Menschen in ihren (erschwerten) Lebensumständen aktiv unterstützen. Besonders bei Personen mit erhöhtem Hilfebedarf müssen solche Systeme zuverlässig Notfallsituationen erkennen. Beispielsweise kommt es häufig vor, dass demente Menschen nachts hilflos in ihrer Wohnung umherirren oder sich tagsüber während Alltagsaktivitäten im Freien verlaufen. Die dauerhafte persönliche Anwesenheit eines Pflegers oder pflegenden Angehörigen stößt aber trotz des Hilfebedarfs oft auf eine Ablehnung der Betroffenen oder ist aufgrund der finanziellen Lebensumstände nicht möglich. Obwohl heutige, auf dem Markt verfügbare Lösungen relativ günstig zu haben sind – beispielsweise Kamerasysteme mit Bewegungserkennung, die Bilder per E-Mail schicken oder diese auf einer Webseite oder App zur Verfügung stellen – findet eine weite Verbreitung im häuslichem Umfeld aufgrund der fehlenden Akzeptanz, geschuldet der Größe der Geräte, der geringen Benutzbarkeit sowie der hohen technischen Hürden, nicht statt. Auch im klinisch/pflegerischen Umfeld sind solche, meist proprietäre Speziallösungen, wegen der hohen Wartungs- und Integrationskosten eher wenig verbreitet. Ein alternativer, offener und kostengünstiger Ansatz bietet die Verwendung sozialer Netzwerke in Verbindung mit leistungsfähigen Kleinstrechnern. Mittels solcher Lösungen können Pflegende wie auch Familienangehörige ihre bestehenden sozialen Netzwerke für eine schnelle Benachrichtigung in Notfallsituationen oder für regelmäßige Kontrollen, unter Einhaltung der Privatsphäre, nutzen. Ein einfacher Weg soziale Netzwerke mit ambienten Assistenzsystemen zu vereinen, bietet hierbei der Einsatz der Bot-Technologie. Im Rahmen des Schwerpunktprojekts „iCare“, das von der Internationalen Bodenseehochschule (IBH) gefördert wird, wurde ein Bot-basiertes Verfahren entwickelt, mit dem eine beliebige Gruppe von Pflegenden bzw. Angehörigen in einem Notfall benachrichtigt werden kann. Die im Projekt entwickelte Bot-Plattform basiert auf offenen Standards, die sich für die Entwicklung verschiedenster ambienter Systeme, respektive zur Unterstützung zahlreicher Anwendungsfälle, eignen. Alternativ können auch andere soziale Netzwerke, wie zum Beispiel verschiedene Messenger-Dienste, an das System angeschlossen werden, so dass den Pflegenden bzw. Angehörigen eine nutzungsfreundliche und niederschwellige Integration des Systems in ihren vertrauten Kommunikationsmedien möglich ist. Neben der technischen Weiterentwicklung des Bot-basierten Verfahrens, beschäftigt sich das Projekt „iCare“ auch mit der Evaluation solcher Assistenzsysteme unter Realbedingungen. Dies soll einen Beitrag zum Verständnis allfälliger Akzeptanzprobleme in der Praxis bilden

    Do-it-yourself as a means for making assistive technology accessible to elderly people: Evidence from the iCare project

    New assistive technology (AT) is at our disposal for improv- ing the everyday life of people in need. Yet, the current way how AT is produced and provisioned is hindering certain marginalised groups in the population, particularly elderly people, to get access to it. To expedite time-to-market, reduce costs, and increase accessibility to otherwise unattainable AT, we explore if do-it-yourself (DIY) could be a feasible and desirable alternative to commercial applica- tions. We provide answers to the following research ques- tions: (1) For whom does the DIY approach work in the context of assistive technology? (2) Under which circum- stances do DIY work? and (3) How can researchers make DIY a satisfying experience? The evidence we collected dur- ing the “iCare” project suggests that DIY attracts both, elderly people with a need-based motive and a hedonic motive. It also shows that a participatory approach and an early engagement with potential users, their family mem- bers, and informal caregivers is beneficial for improving design and use-related aspects of the AT and the DIY intervention
